Moussa says Baghdad remains on track to host Arab League summit

Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa on Tuesday denied intentions to reschedule the upcoming March summit in Baghdad.

"This [date change] will only happen if Iraq makes such a request," Moussa said in a press statement.

During the league summit held in Libya in March, officials decided Iraq was in line to host the 2011 summit. The officials, however, stipulated that Arab foreign ministers would need to confirm the Baghdad location prior to the summit.

Many Arab countries fear the security situation and tumultuous political landscape renders Baghdad a less-than-optimal location for the diplomatic function. Egypt, the Arab League's headquarters, is the summit's default location should the ministers determine Baghdad unfit.

Iraqi officials previously announced the government's decision to allocate US$200 million for infrastructural improvements in order to provide a conference building for the summit and accommodations for participants.
