MP demands female representation in parliamentary delegations

A female member of the House of Representatives has demanded that the house speaker ensure women are represented in parliamentary delegations.

Anisa Hassouna, one of 28 MPs appointed to the chamber by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, sent a letter to Parliament speaker Ali Abdelaal saying the bylaws fail to ensure female representation in parliamentary delegations despite the fact that there are 89 women among the chamber’s 596 members.

“The world beholds women in parliaments with appreciation,” said Hassouna, a former diplomatic attache and former Arab League official.

In 2015, Egypt fell seven slots to 136th among 146 countries in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report.
