Navy foils illegal immigration by 179 persons

Egypt's navy has thwarted an attempt at illegal migration from Egyptian waters to southern Europe involving 179 persons on board a fishing boat.

The operation was the navy's third successful interception of an illegal migration attempt in less than 24 hours, according to information released by the Egyptian military.

On Monday, Military Spokesperson Mohamed Samir said on Facebook that the 179 people intercepted were from Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, Guinea, Ghana and Comoros Islands.

“The boat was seized, and the people were taken to the naval base of Ras al-Tin. Medical care was offered. Legal measures were taken against them,” he said.
