NDP candidate nominations to be announced after Eid

Secretary-General for the National Democratic Party (NDP) Safwat al-Sherif said his party is still in the process of selecting candidates for the upcoming People’s Assembly elections.

The NDP follows a certain set of procedures for the nomination of candidates and the party's organization secretariat is supervising the work of the electoral colleges, according to a statement made by al-Sherif on the NDP official website. The statement added that the names of those who applied for nominations will be announced after the Eid al-fitr vacation.

Meanwhile, the NDP official warned members of the party wishing to run in the election against holding publicity conferences or displaying campaign posters before candidates have been officially selected.

Al-Sherif's warning echoes a recent ban by Cairo's governor on election posters and banners prior to the official start of election campaigning.

Meanwhile, Minister of Local Development Mohamed Abdel Salam al-Mahgoub said he shas ubmitted his nomination papers for the professional seat in the Raml Constituency in Alexandria, adding that his nomination has led other competitors from the NDP to withdraw their bids.

At a Laylat al-Qadr celebration two days ago in Alexandria, al-Mahgoub said he was honored by the withdrawals and called on everyone to work together to serve the Raml community. The celebration was attended by 3000 people, most importantly Governor of Alexandria Adel Labib.

In his speech, Labib said Egypt is at an important stage of economic, political and social development. Freedom of expression, a multi-party system and better services are the most significant features of this development, Labib added.

The Al-Ahrar (liberal) Party said it welcomes the nomination of al-Mahgoub and commended the achievements he has made for Alexandria.
