New governors to swear in within days: Cabinet source

Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawy has decided on new governors for a re-shuffle, an official Cabinet source said, adding that new governors are set to swear in before interim President Adly Mansour within days.

Egypt has not seen a governor re-shuffle since Mohamed Morsy announced 17 new appointments in mid-June. The announcement, which saw seven Islamist officials take local government posts, ignited protests across the country.

The Cabinet source said that Beblawy had held three meetings with Minister of Local Development Adel Labib, in which both agreed on governors and governorates subject to change.

Candidates for posts had already been contacted, the source revealed.

Beblawy's tips for governors came after a list of candidates was approved by regulatory authorities.

Governor of Giza, Ali Abdel Rahman, will maintain his post while Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated governors who left their posts following Morsy's overthrow in early July will be replaced, the source added.

Governors in Beni Suef, Daqahlia, Monufiya, Sharqiya, Kafr al-Sheikh, Qalyubiya, Gharbiya, Beheira, Fayoum, Minya and Assiut will be replaced.
