Nine defendants in former top prosecutor murder sentenced to death

The Court of Cassation on Sunday upheld the death sentence against nine defendants involved in the assassination of former top prosecutor Hisham Barakat.

The Cairo Criminal Court, headed by Judge Hassan Farid, sentenced 28 defendants to death on July 22, 2017 for the assassination of Barakat and sentenced 15 others to life in prison.

Eight were sentenced to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment, and 15 others were sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.

The accusations brought against defendant Mohamed Kamal were dismissed because of his death.

Barakat was killed in a bomb attack on his motorcade in Heliopolis in June 2015. The accused were charged with premeditated murder, attempted murder, possession  of firearms and ammunition, and the possession and manufacture of bombs.
