Nine dead in Giza truck crash

Nine people were killed and eight injured Thursday when two trucks collided in Ayyat, a neighborhood in southern Giza

Investigations revealed that the driver of one of the trucks lost control of the steering wheel and his truck rolled several times before hitting the other truck, which was transferring 18 workers from Ayyat to a factory in 6 October City. Police are looking for one of the drivers.

The dead and injured were transferred to hospitals.

A total of 1,999 accidents occurred on Egypt's main roads and highways last year, killing 980 people and injuring 4,392, according to a report released on 15 May by the General Authority for Roads, Bridges and Land Transport.

Road and rail accidents in recent years have sparked public outcry over the government’s record on transportation safety. Many crashes in Egypt are caused by reckless driving, lax traffic rules and poor road conditions.
