One killed, 5 injured in gas pipeline explosion in New Cairo

A gas pipeline exploded in New Cairo city, northern Cairo, on Saturday, a security source said.

 The source added that fire trucks rushed to the scene at 90 Street, in the Fifth Settlement district, while police cordoned off the area.

The accident led to a huge jam traffic at 90 Street.

The security source told Al-Masry Al-Youm that one person was killed and five others were injured in the explosion.

Health Ministry confirmed that one person killed, while 17 others were injured in the explosion, and were transferred to nearby hospital for treatment.

Security sources said that a loader used in maintaining the sewerage system in the area had broken the gas line at the Fifth Settlement and sparked a fire.

The driver of the loader has been detained for investigations.

Interior Minister Magdy Abdel Ghaffar arrived at the scene to follow the efforts to put off the fire.
