Parliament asks ministry to examine bridge project linking Egypt, Saudi Arabia

Parliament’s Transportation Committee called on the transportation minister to conduct technical studies on a project to build a bridge between Egypt and Saudi Arabia to transport passengers and pilgrims between the two countries.

An official source from the Transportation Ministry said a bridge that would link Egypt and Saudi Arabia would heavily impact the navigation line between Jordan's Aqaba port and Egypt's Nuweiba port. He added that this navigation line serves more than 800,000 passengers and pilgrims annually.

Another 100,000 vehicles that move between Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia use this navigation line, the source added.

The same source added that the Jordanian government is closely following the project because of the losses it could cause for Jordan if it is implemented, particularly since Aqaba is the only sea port in Jordan.

In addition, development in Nuweiba will likely incur heavy losses if the project is undertaken.
