Parliament to continue its work until January 2021: Abdel-Aal

Speaker of the Egyptian House of Representatives Ali Abdel-Aal said on Tuesday that the current parliament will continue its work until January 9, 2021 as stipulated in the Constitution, which outlines 5-year legislative terms.

“The current parliament began its work on the 9th of January, 2016 and ends on the 9th of January, 2021 at 12 pm,” Abdel-Aal underlined during a plenary session of the Parliament on Tuesday.

“The past period witnessed confusion (regarding) the number of sessions and the duration of the legislative term – the period of the legislative term is stipulated by the Constitution (to be) 5 years, (but) the number of sessions is not mentioned in the constitution, and (because of this) there remains the possibility of a second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and other sessions, since it is not specified in terms of numbers (like) the duration of the legislative term,” Abdel-Aal said.

“This is a confusing point that I would like to clarify, as the current parliament will continue its work until January 9, 2021, and there is a new session in October 2020,” he explained.

“Accordingly, the parliament has the right to legislate and carry out its functions in accordance with the Constitution and the law, and this session is not the last,” he said.
