Police pressure taxi drivers to help out on election day

The Interior Ministry has come up with an idea to "persuade" Egyptian taxi drivers to render their services to the ministry during Sunday’s parliamentary elections, such as driving supervisors to polling stations and transporting ballot boxes.

The ministry has ordered police officers to confiscate taxi drivers’ driving licenses, which drivers can pick up again after helping out on election day. Drivers can also expect to receive an LE150 daily stipend for their troubles.

Taxi drivers, for their part, have criticized the ministry for adopting the measure, which they say will result in them losing money. Some of them say they already barely make enough money to pay off monthly loan installments to banks.

Others expressed fear that their cars might be damaged in the event that violence breaks out during the balloting.
