Pope Tawadros to resume weekly sermons

Father Paul Halim, a spokesperson for the Coptic Orthodox Church, has said that Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria will resume giving his weekly sermon at the request of church followers after a 42-day suspension.

A large number of Coptic activists called on Pope Tawadros to continue his weekly sermon, which he suspended after the assassination of top prosecutor Hisham Barakat on June 29.

The first sermon will be held at the Virgin Church of the cathedral on August 19 due to current construction work being done at the cathedral, Halim added.

The suspension of the sermon had nothing to do with the security situation but was due to restoration work at the cathedral, which will continue until 2018 to celebrate its 50-year inauguration, he mentioned.
