Pro-ElBaradei campaign seeks collective proxies

The campaign aiming to enable former International Atomic Energy Agency director Mohamed ElBaradei to demand constitutional change has abandoned the the idea of obtaining individual proxies (endorsements which authorize a person to demand constitutional change or nominate oneself in an election), instead resorting to the judiciary to facilitate the signature of collective proxies.

The proxies will authorize an establishing committee of 12 members to demand amendments to the Constitution.

Safwan Mohamed, general coordinator for the campaign, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the goal of such a move is to consolidate political and opposition power in support of constitutional change, especially given the current situation where notary offices are delaying the granting of citizen proxies.

Mohamed added that the establishing committee will include Mohamed ElBaradei, Amr Moussa, Hassan Nafaa, Yehia el-Gamal, Mohamed Selim el-Awwa, counselors Hesham el-Bastawisy and Mahmoud el-Khodeiry, Hamdein Sobahy, Ayman Nour, Abdel Ghaffar Shokr, Usama el-Ghazali Harb, George Ishaq and Hasaballah el-Kafrawi. He added that these figures have already agreed to form the committee and attend its preparatory meetings.
