Prosecutor General and Army spokesperson deny imprisoning Morsy

Prosecutor General Hesham Barakat denied issuing a decision to detain ousted President Mohamed Morsy, in addition to other Muslim Brotherhood leaders, for 15 days pending an investigation, on charges of spying and working for the benefit of foreign countries.

Morsy has been in an unknown military facility since he was ousted by the army earlier this month, after mass popular protests against his rule.

The military said last week that Morsy is being held in a safe place for his protection and that he is being treated well.

Morsy and Brotherhood leaders face charges of collaborating with elements of Hamas and Hezbollah to help them escape from prison during the January 2011 revolution that toppled Hosni Mubarak.

Samir Hassan, the investigation judge who is to interrogate Morsy and Brotherhood leaders said that no decision has been issued in the case. He is currently working on examining reports filed against the ousted president and has not yet started the investigation.

This comes after state-run newspaper Al-Ahram reported on Monday that a decision was issued to detain Morsy for 15 days pending further investigation into the case.

Judicial sources said, however, that interrogations with Morsy and Brotherhood leaders on charges of spying, killing demonstrators, and spreading chaos will likely start on Thursday.

Armed Forces spokesperson Ahmed Ali also denied imprisoning Morsy. He added that publishing such news has the aim of provoking the public.
