Railways lack capacity to transport Eid vacationers, officials say

The Egyptian Railways Authority in a statement on Tuesday said it does not have the capacity to tranport three million passengers expected to travel from Upper Egypt to the country's north during the Eid vacation due to a shortage in trains and related safety issues.

The statement said 14 additional trains will be operational during the vacation. This increase in capacity, however, remains inadequate, sources said.

The Holding Company for Land Transport said it will be fully operational with 2000 buses running during the vacations. The company employees will not take a day off in order to make sure the service is at its utmost efficiency, company sources said.

"We haven’t raised our ticket prices in three years for social considerations,” company president Mohamed Youssef added.
