Rights groups complain of random detentions following Alex church blast

Egyptian human rights activists have submitted a complaint to the Attorney-General against the random detention of scores of people by security services in Alexandria on suspicion of involvement in the New Year's Eve church bombing.

According to activists, suspects have been subject to police violence. They noted that an Alexandrian man, Sayyed Belal, had been tortured to death while in police custody, while another, Mohamed Ismail Abdo, had vanished after being arrested on 5 January.

The complaint listed the names of 65 people recently detained for questioning throughout Egypt. Another 300 people, the complaint noted, had been arrested in Alexandria alone since the church attack.

Activists urged that investigations be carried out in full accordance with the law.
