Run-offs update: Violence erupts in northern Sinai

Violence erupted today in the Beir al-Abd District in north Sinai as candidates’ supporters clashed in front of a polling station.

The district’s run-offs are taking place between the ruling-NDP candidate Ramadan Sarhan and independent candidate Soliman al-Zallout.

Three supporters sustained moderate injuries during the clashes and were transferred to Deir al-Abd hospital. The clashes did not involve the use of arms, but blood was seen at the scene of the incident. Northern Sinai is known for its large arms caches, accumulated through smuggling operations.
