SCAF deputy head meets with university leaders

Sami Anan, deputy head of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, met Wednesday with university leaders to affirm the military council’s commitment to upholding the democratic process, transparency and freedom of expression during the transitional period.

The meeting comes amid university students’ uproar against the SCAF. University students participated heavily in civil disobedience on Saturday. They also organized massive protests at the military council headquarters in Abbasseya during recent days.

State-owned Middle East News Agency (MENA) said Anan met with Higher Education Minister Hussein Mostafa Moussa, the president of Assiut University and deans from Assiut and Alexandria Universities at the headquarters of the Defense Ministry.

The meeting discussed the major challenges that Egypt faces during the current period and suggestions for preserving Egypt’s national security and the ensuring a positive future for higher education.

Anan called upon university leaders about the reality of the situation in Egypt and to encourage freedom of expression. He stressed that the military council encourages the youth to participate in political life by forming parties and engaging in the political process.
