Security beefed up at Cairo airport on 9/11 anniversary

Passengers leaving for New York, Europe and Israel on Sunday were subjected to tighter-than-usual security measures at Cairo International Airport on the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the US.

Security authorities are monitoring passenger and luggage screening procedures over fears of revenge attacks after the recent killing of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Security measures on Air Sinai flights to Tel Aviv were tightened after Egyptian protesters stormed the Israeli Embassy and took down its flag on Friday.

On September 11, 2001, 19 members of Al-Qaeda hijacked three commercial aircraft and attacked the Word Trade Towers and the Pentagon in the US, killing approximately 3000 people.
