Six dead after 3-story house collapses in Upper Egypt

Six people were killed on Monday after a three-story house collapsed in the Tama township in the Sohag Governorate.

All six victims, who ranged in age from between four and 30 years old, were members of the same family.

One body has been recovered from the rubble so far and rescue teams are currently searching for the rest.

Initial investigations showed the collapse had been due to the fact that the brick and concrete structure was built without any support columns.

The collapse of buildings and multi-story homes in Egypt is an all-too-common phenomenon due to the deterioration of aging structures, unethical practices by contractors such as the use of low-quality construction materials, and the violation of building bylaws such as bans on the construction of additional floors.
