Socialists back teacher protests for educational reform

Egypt’s socialists have voiced support for Thursday's upcoming teacher demonstrations, where people will demand the removal of Education Minister Moheb al-Rafie, the introduction of educational reforms and better working conditions.

“It is only when Egyptian teachers from all governorates unite to reject the Civil Service law and demand a change that education laws will change,” the Popular Socialist Alliance Party said in a statement, declaring solidarity with protests by independent teachers' unions.

The statement said it backs the protesters’ demand to “improve teachers' wages and pensions” and “the liberation of their syndicate and the amendment of its regulations”.

“Reforming education….is the real surety for progress and countering terrorism,” said the party.
