Students, April 6 call for release of peers

Hundreds of engineering students from Cairo University staged a protest outside the High Court in Cairo Tuesday over the detainment of peers in Mansoura.

They chanted against the Public Prosecution and called for the Mansoura students’ release.

The group was protesting over the arrest of more than 20 Mansoura University students, some whom belong to the "Ahrar" movement, a self-styled vigilante youth group enforcing public virtue.

They were arrested following violent clashes erupted during a sit-in at the Mansoura University campus this month calling for an independent investigation over the killing of female student Gehad Moussa, who was run over by a car on campus.

In related news, April 6 Youth Movement members staged protests Tuesday afternoon outside several police stations in Monufiya to demand the release of colleagues detained for organizing protests across the governorate.

Ahmed Yousef, a member of the movement, said protests were staged in Quesna, Berket al-Sabe', Shebin al-Koam and al-Bagour. Yousef added the movement plans to continue protesting if their colleagues are not released.
