Suez lawyers on strike in protest against police attacks

Clashed erupted on Saturday between lawyers and policemen in Suez, causing the evacuation of the security court, after lawyers staged a strike at the governate's complex of courts and prosecutors in protest of an assault by a policeman on one of their colleagues.
 
Dozens of lawyers gathered at the court demanding official apology from Interior Ministry and investigation into the policemen who attacked the lawyers.
 
Hussein Boraie, lawyer, confirmed injury of five of his colleagues, who were transferred to hospital. He stressed necessity that policemen respect lawyers, threatening escalation otherwise. He also demanded strict measures against whoever attempts to attack them and called on the main syndicate to intervene.
 
Upon approval of all members, the board of the syndicate branch in the governorate decided to halt all work and abstain from attending sessions as well as impose sanctions against lawyers who do not comply to the board decision until the incident is investigated and the ministry apologizes.
 
Meanwhile, Major General Tareq al-Gazzar, the governorate’s security chief, said investigations are ongoing with the perpetrators and that law will be applied on any involved policeman.
 
The Suez security department earlier announce the injury of seven of its policemen during the incidents after filing medical reports.
