Suspect in building collapses arrested

Alexandria airport authorities arrested the main suspect in the collapse of four apartment buildings which killed at least 19 and injured nine on Tuesday.

Authorities received information that Ali Ahmed Akbar was hiding among vacationers in Agamy on the Mediterranean coast. Security broke into the house where the suspect was staying with his sons.

Preliminary investigations reported that the suspect was getting ready to travel abroad. He will be transferred to prosecution for further investigation.

An 11-story apartment building collapsed on Saturday in the working-class neighborhood of Gomrok, leading to the collapse of three neighboring buildings. Emergency response teams are still removing debris.

Building collapses are not uncommon. Poorly constructed buildings can be found in informal settlements, poor neighborhoods and rural areas.
