Trial of Safwat al-Sherif, his two sons postponed to 30 April

Cairo Criminal Court, headed by Judge Mohamed Khalafallah, postponed the trial of Safwat al-Sherif and his two sons to 30 April.

The trial was suspended pending a report by the committee of experts formed upon the order of the court to examine documents relating to the case.

Al-Sherif , the Mubarak-era Shura Council speaker, and his two sons are on trial over illegal gains charges and abuse of office.

The Illicit Gains Authority referred Sherif and his two sons Ehab who has been released and Ashraf who is fugitive to the criminal court over illicit gains worth LE600 million through the abuse of Sherif's office.

Ehab was released after an appeal was made on the grounds that the charges had not been adequately investigated.

Egypt had asked the Interpol to arrest and extradite Ashraf.

Sherif is charged with amassing the money when he was in the positions of chairman of the General Authority for Information Service, chairman of Radio and Television Union, minister of information and chairman of the Shura Council. Sherif had been accused in another case of inciting the killing of demonstrators in the Battle of the Camel.

The Illicit Gains Authority demanded including Sherif's wife Iqbal Attiya Halaby and his daughter Eman in the case.
