Twenty succumb to swine flu countrywide within past week

Egypt's Ministry of Health revealed on Monday that 20 people died from complications associated with the H1N1 virus, commonly known as "swine flu,” and 733 people were infected, during the past week alone.

In a press statement, Ministry of Health spokesman Abdel Rahman Shahin said that lab results indicate the number of swine flu cases decreased during the current winter season with 14,846 cases reported between October 2009 and January 2010 as compared to 3214 cases during the current season.

Shahin said the declining number of cases results from improved monitoring and diagnosis of the disease in over 450 hospitals nationwide.

The Ministry of Health predicts infection rates to increase until the end of the month before it begins to decrease by the end of the cold season and the start of spring.
