Zahi Hawass to publish encyclopedia on Egypt’s ancient history next year

Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass will publish next year an encyclopedia on Egypt’s ancient history in collaboration with the Egyptian-Russian Foundation for Culture and Science, Hussein al-Shafei, the foundation’s president said on Saturday.

The encyclopedia will include Hawass’ full work, exploring the hidden aspects of Egyptian civilization, details about its monuments, and a review on the history of ancient Kings and their families.

The publication will be dubbed, “Zahi Hawass writes about ancient Egypt.”

Shafei said that the Egyptian-Russian Foundation for Culture and Science will publish the encyclopedia in three languages: Arabic, Russian and English, adding that it will represent an essence of Hawass’s thoughts, archaeological discoveries and researches for over half century.

In a meeting on Saturday, Shafei, along with the editor-in-chief of Russian News, (Arabic edition) discussed with Hawass, Egypt’s former minister of Antiquities, the specifics of this joint cooperation.

They agreed that the first edition of the encyclopedia will be released at the next Cairo International Book Fair in January.

Hawass was born in a small village near Damietta. Although he originally dreamed of becoming an attorney, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Greek and Roman Archaeology from Alexandria University in 1967. He later earned a diploma in Egyptology from Cairo University. Hawass also worked at the Great Pyramids as an inspector.

Being one of the most prominent archaeologists worldwide, Hawass has many discoveries to his name. According to his official website, his recent discoveries include the Tombs of the Pyramid Builders and the Valley of the Golden Mummies.

Hawass also headed the team that scanned King Tutankhamun’s mummy to unravel mysteries surrounding the lives and deaths of ancient Egyptian kings.
